Will Applied buy ASML's unwanted units?

The rumors are starting to hit the streets that ASML Holding NV will reportedly sell its track and thermal equipment units to Applied Materials Inc., the chip-equipment in Santa Clara, Calif.

Earlier this month, chipmaking equipment maker ASML of the Netherlands announced that it intends to cut 22% of its work force by a mix of cuts, closures and a divestiture.

ASML is trying to sell off its Thermal operations, which are based in Scotts Valley, Calif. However, the company will shut down the Track operation as of December 2002, with a related charge of about $45 million.

Both the track and thermal units were part of Silicon Valley Group Inc. (SVG), which was acquired by ASML for $1.6 billion in 2001. ASML also acquired SVG's lithography unit in the deal, but the Dutch company last year scrapped SVG's litho products, including the 193-nm scanner line.
