Greg tells me that he could feel the effects of a long mission for weeks afterward. He was an instructor pilot, and his seat was a fold-down bench behind the pilot. It's a bit like sitting on a bleacher for 14 hours at a stretch. The eject port for the pilots is no bigger than the side window of your car and anything not tucked in gets taken off. I guarantee you any politician would shut up about $600 toilet seats if he ever had to use one on a B-52. It's not like you can read the paper while you are on that throne.

Greg never talked about real missions, but on one training flight across the Rockies he had to over-ride the navigation to avoid what he called "ground interference."

My story is that we had to walk a hundred yards to the end of a painted line so the guys with M-16s could get a look at us before we got close to the parked planes. Greg said they shot anybody who stepped over it.

I have an abiding respect for our military people because I've seen what they routinely do for our sake.
