Why is it there are virtually no liberal radio talk shows in the United States which come close to the success earned by Rush Limbaugh?

Nuanced, thoughtful positions do not lend themselves well to bombast.

Philosophical differences. Rush plays on one of the most fundamental characteristics of man. Greed. He uses a lot of sophistry, but the key success ingredient is greed. Whether it's power, financial or religious ideological greed. Though I don't hear Rush, in particular, spend much time on the ideological. Very few men will admit greed, it's preferable to use terms like "success". We like to re-paint our greed in positive terminology in order to feel good about ourselves. We also like to remove ourselves from any responsibility from the ills of the world or country. We generally take the approach of blaming someone else rather than acknowledge our part in it.

As a general illustration, consider free-trade. We'll skip all the platitudes about free-trade; we know them well. It's hard to find a person that will stand up and say that they are opposed to free-trade. Pres Bush will applaud free-trade as a concept, but what has he done. Increased farm subsidies by 65%; levied tariffs on Canadian lumber twice; imposed steel tariffs on the steel producing world [which has kicked off a tariff war with Europe]; refused to negotiate with Britain on additional air routes under the "Open Skies" program [I'm not sure that's the precise title of the program]. I have yet to find anyone that claims these are free trade initiatives. They are pure and simple protectionist policies, i.e., greed. And there will be people that will rationalize till the sun goes down about the correctness of these protectionist policies. And Bush will continue to travel and praise the goodness of free-trade along with the US trade negotiators. I have yet to see anything of substance out of this Adminsitration that constitutes free-trade. Much lip service about free trade; "visions" of free trade in the future, but nothing else. It's all about greed. Making sure that we have or maintain a competitive advantage at the expense of taxpayers.

That's the short answer.

I think it's because left-wing commentators tell their listeners what they should think while Rush gives voice to what his already know.
