Russ, regarding the 1996 bubble that popped in 1997, I agree with you that it was a bubble, brought on largely by Voisey's Bay and Bre-X. But now we have some big success stories in the works today, and I think gold is going far above $400/oz. so I think we will see another speculative mania like 1996. One thing I have learned is that markets always go further in a given direction than they logically should.

Interesting article by Ned Schmidt...

kitco.com

In it he states that "the fair value estimate for gold remains about US$505". Does anyone know anything about his background, how he comes up with this figure or what methodology he uses to determine his "fair", "undervalued" and "overvalued" gold prices?

TIA,
Howy

<Those were bubble prices similar to the dot.com era, tied into a strong hysteria/greed cycle. >

I don't think it was a very big bubble. Gold had been above $380 for two years and reaching $400. It was perfectly normal for stocks with gold in the ground to sell at $100 or so per ounce.

It will happen again and stocks with 3M ounces of gold in the ground will sell easily for $300M when gold is at $400.

At the moment they are selling for $30-$60/oz depending on specifics. When gold is $400 they will sell for $90-$120 on the same specifics. Its mathematical.
