Cary:

I try to gauge the future sales of the company, as well as the margins, just like you. However, I do not rely on ratios very much, if at all. To me, the only rational reason to invest in a company is when they are making (or you have strong reason to believe they will be making) increasing sales or increasing positive margins. This takes some insight into the markets they serve. Customer sentiment and more importantly spending is a great indicator to me.

Let's take JDSU. I do not see any indication there will be a major upswing in telecom spending this year. It may be 30% better than last year, with most of that coming late in the year....maybe. 30% will not be enough to reverse JDSU's slide, because it will not relieve the pricing pressure, because it will not create a supply problem. Indeed, I see every indication JDSU is trying to tout market share to take the pressure off negative cash flow.

Bottom line, I watch cash flow, or try to.
