I would not be surprised if they lost American Express and or Bank One.

Bank One would be an enormous loss.

DISPLY "GOD HELP ME I'M LOOPING" UPON CONSOLE
I see I left out the A in DISPLAY.

I swear to god their system was (and probably still is) cluttered with total nonsense like that.

We had a huge laugh when we saw that and the "boobs" test.
FDC knows they need to get off that garbage system but could not figure out how. They studied the problem for years (blowing about as much $ studying the problem as opposed to just doing it. Finally we were RELUCTANTLY given a go ahead to build a brand new system, but after 6 months, then they went back into study mode trying to figure out how to line by line convert the mess to UNIX.
Trust me, that is absolutely impossible. Even if it was possible, you would have to be nuts to try it.

The total nonsense thing is we were not allowed to use the word "conversion" at all. Somehow, we were supposed to build this new system, without requiring a conversion as that is precisely what they were telling all their key customers.

Yeah right, new system - no conversion.

Their management kept insisting it was possible. In the meantime some consultants from IBM were spewing nonsense about how websphere and a whole bunch of hodgepodge nonsense would make the task easier.

After a 6 month start, we had to rehash everything all over again. Eventually the methodology became more important than the delivery. Finally, after spending 8 months developing a methodology and tons of $, the project was scrapped but no clients were told.

Quite literally, some humomngous % of all credit card transactions in the entire US runs thru (in some way shape or form) an ancient tape system of FDC's.
