Hi DJ, good news, per Raymond's suggestion I did the three-finger salute (CNTRL-ALT-DEL) and manually got rid of all programs operating on the system except "Explorer" and "Systray" (Windows 98ME OS), and then started the defragment routine. PC completed in 30 minutes what it could not do last night for 7 hours.

I feel much better now.
