Mobile telecom service providers have embarked on an active wireless Internet shopping mall service to explore the wired and wireless integrated E-Commerce market. According to the industry on Dec. 29, three mobile telecom carriers, SK Telecom, KTF, and LG Telecom, are coming up with a series of strategies to encourage the use of the shopping mall service since customers increasingly pay attention to recently opened wireless Internet shopping malls.

Accordingly, 2003 is expected to be actually the beginning of the wireless Internet shopping.

SK Telecom is operating ‘NATEMALL ( mall.nate.com)’ on the wired and wireless Internet. The shopping mall combined Happy2Buy and Lycos Shoppingmall and started sales on Nov. 14. Movie ticket sales, in particular, are attracting customers on the mobile Internet.

SK Telecom is going to expand the market by making the most of mobile advertising in the next year. In addition, it is to debut products suitable for the wireless environment such as auction, product price comparison, and contents.

KTF opened ‘Kmerce ( shop.k-merce.com)’ in August and expects the shopping mall to post about 900 million won in sales this year. KTF is scheduled to increase the sales to more than 25 billion won by utilizing characteristics of the wireless Internet in the next year.

"We will explore new markets by offering special services on the mobile Internet such as SMS and mobile advertising by using CRM, starting in early 2003,” said one official of KTF.

The company is going to entice consumer by establishing the same shopping mall on the wired Internet and give discounts to those who buy through the wireless Internet. Furthermore, it is examining various marketing ways like catalog through the mobile Internet.

LG Telecom's mobile Internet ez-i is proving a service of delivering books, discs, and flowers through 'Mobile Market Place' and 'Hansol CS Club'.

"We will concentrate on intangible information, contents, and distribution, rather than on sales of general products, on the mobile Internet," said one official of LG Telecom. "We plan to launch a service enabling consumers to buy moving pictures and still images on shopping malls, starting in early 2003."

Officials of those three telecom carriers forecasted that even though they put emphasis on the service launch this year, the service would take root as a niche business in the next year.
