In the 1960s, Robert Kennedy proposed the elimination of educational deferments. I cannot remember what his specific reason was.

I don't think they put it this way, but I believe we were more willing to let the dumb ones die. Plus dumb ones follow orders better. Too much thinking is not desirable. Same criteria exists for police.

Lesser known, there was also an exemption for civilians that worked in the intelligence community [I'm sure there were other specialties that I'm not aware of.] Rationale: it was better to continue to use a trained civilian collecting and processing intelligence than it was to put a rifle in their hands and say...Go north young man. There's Cong in them thar hills.
