Grace, I was with a couple stock agencies.
I sold more on my own than I did with either.
One who I at least had some income from on a steady basis, sold the business to another entity.

Well that entity talked me into a bunch of ads (at big expense to me), that ended up costing me $ and making them $. I stopped the adds and have not sold another image thru them.

Stock agencies wants lots and lots of model released images.
I do not have that many. Some that I thought were absolutely stellar were even turned down by one place.

Competition is high and pay is low.
My files are primarily travel, scenic, and outdoor recreational images (travel related). The supply for that is immense and the demand low.

I have found that it is easier to market this stuff myself than for stock agencies to do it.

As a 35MM shooter I am also up against some medium format shooters. Calendar companies will almost always select medium format over 35mm if they have a choice.

I have done well with Browntrout Calendars over the years and they have told me I am one of few 35 mm photographers they will work with. I am competing against the best landsacpe photographers in the entire country to get into Browntrout and I can hold my own. But most of those guys live on peanuts. The very top of the top do well. The next rung down survives, the next rung down has another job to support himself.

There is no easy road in editorial work, and I do not have the equipment or desire to do studio setup work.
