But the survey also disclosed that 85% of IEEE Fellows agreed that high-caliber students are no longer choosing engineering as a profession, because they are able to make more money in other fields.

No kidding!

You get over six figures to run a crane in Oakland Calif plus a union to fight for your job. Hours are great too... No extra hours to meet a schedule unless you get a boat load of overtime.

Go down The Bay to the Silicon Valley and you find many laid off senior engineers that never saw a 6 figure income AND had no union watching out for them AND worked like dogs only to get laid off.

Still, if you like to create, design or build stuff, then it is a hard job to beat. Today, I'd advise smart kids in HS to go into biotechnology if they want a high tech career.... they can always be Dr's if they want to work long shifts or go on to biotech companies.

What would you and others advise people do for careers if they don't want to be engineers? Right now, it would seem being a contractor to build homes and do remodels would have fit similar skills well AND be highly profitable. Then again, these are not the math geeks and the good ones are very personable such as my cousin who is killing himself working long, long hours but at his own highly profitable business...
