Very interesting stats: (Dow Jones) Using the current U.S. population, the S&P 500 Index's loss
this year equates to $7,948 per person and $14,391 since 2000 began. The latter
figure is based on the S&P 500's 39% drop over the past three years. The last
three-year run - 1939 to 1941 - saw the S&P 500 fall 34%. Looked at another
way, investors have lost a total of $2.3 trillion this year, and $4.16 trillion
since 1999, if all their investments are in S&P 500 stocks. No S&P 500 stocks
have doubled this year. The last time this happened was 1990. And 95 members
lost at least 50% in 2002, compared with only 35 in 2001 and 36 in 2000. (KJT)
