I think part of the comfort one can have in having a disease or condition is the certain knowledge of its nature. There is no comfort like knowledge. Most fear is based more on the ignorance of the truth (at a gut level) than of the risk of the object of fear. Even cancer can be fought and defeated. To empower it with an overwhelming fear only serves to strengthen it. Knowledge of it as a process weakens it.

So, if I was going to die in 9 months, I'd make sure that my affairs were in order now, including that in the emotional and spiritual realm. On that note, I saw Ollie North this morning talking about how people were wrong about the notion of karma (he didn't use the word, he probably didn't know it). He said 'Some people think that as long as they have enough pluses to offset their minuses, they're okay'. Ollie was telling his interviewer, "We know that isn't true." Interesting. Ollie knows what happens after we die. Good for him.

He was also talking about the origins of his spiritual transformation when a Marine officer hit him in the chest with the Bible in front of 2200 men and said, "Read this!". That's a powerful image for something personal. No problem with the separation of church and state in that context.

While I'm not generally one to disparage anyone's path to enlightenment, Ollie's seems pretty convenient and facile. He could have acted in any immoral way in the past, and he is free and clear now. And he goes on with certain knowledge that his character is better than mine. Good grief. Talk about evil.
