I didn't know there were books on the subject. Think we should have the thread chip in to buy a copy for Bush's birthday?

Having a background in math and statistics [far from my favorite subject] it is a minor annoyance that "statistics" are blamed. Statistics are pure number crunching. They have no morality. They can be crunched accurately or crunched with errors, but [10 + 4]/2 = 7 [average of 10,4] is a crunched number. It's the yoyos that select the numbers and crunch them to mis-represent reality that give statistics a bad name. And the math skills of the general public aren't developed enough to detect when they're being fooled.

By the way, it's not easy being a mathematician.<s> When you meet someone at a party and they ask what you do...Mathematician...It's like you said, I handle highly contagious, deadly diseases for fun and profit<i/>
