res- You would have to back that up with foreign sources. I find it unbelievable that foreign countries would make a far reaching assessment of our capability based on one failed mission.

I didn't say it was *one* failed mission which caused the assessment. I mentioned it because it was an easily recognizable and significant blunder. Once again you've made an illogical assumption and then argued against it.

res- That's right wing propaganda. It's no different than the propaganda that Clinton was the laughing stock of the world. While that claim was being made, Clinton was getting a standing ovation at the UN. Standing ovations at the UN are rare events.

Clinton wasn't even a part of the discussion. How you found a way to drag him into this I found amusing. It's also interesting the way you see things in such black and white clarity. "Reagan and Bush bad, Clinton good". Historical national foreign policy decisions, taken place over three or four administrations, are far more likely to have shades of gray then your dogmatic view.

Further, calling my position "propaganda" is an inflammatory word used by a lot of leftists who can't address the substance of the issue. I've stated my position regarding the way our military was viewed at the time, if you disagree with that view, you'll have to do better then calling it "propaganda".

Perhaps you're too young to remember the way our nations military was eviscerated in the seventies by Carter and other leftists, but I am not. One of the first things Reagan did as President was give our military personnel a much needed large pay raise. Leftists rarely care when our soldiers (willing to die for our nation,) have their families living on food stamps while they are off serving the needs of the nation abroad. Reagan cared, and he took the bold visionary step of rebuilding our military and saying with simple moral clarity "we will win win the cold war". We did, and millions in Europe are free because of his visionary leadership.

Regarding your statement at the U.N. giving Clinton a standing ovation. Socialism is a mental disease we must never allow to infect America the way it has many other parts of the world. In time, if Europe is going to save itself economically it will recognize the disease and begin to change.

By the way, wasn't Bush also given a standing ovation at the U.N. recently?

res- Since you mention the importance of world opinion. Pew did a poll, and virtually every country in the world has a lower opinion of the US than it did a year ago. The only exception was France and it was +1% [a statistical flat]. Muslim countries around the world were down 10-15%.

There are some significant implications when you think about the countries that contain fundamentalist Muslims and their opinion of the US is down 10-15%. It isn't down because the World Trade Centers leveled. It's down because of US foreign policy decisions under that current Administration

Polls go up and polls go down. Sometimes foreign policy leadership means taking a path, which is not supported by the majority. Reagan's foreign policy decision to deploy Pershing missiles in Europe and challenge the Evil Empire were also not popular at the time. Principle centered leaders don't look for polls to find out which moral compass to follow.

If America depended on foreign polls to conduct foreign affairs, history would have been quite different.
