Zonder: The world did change. Yes, nukes existed for generations, but the proliferation into the hands of rogue governments and terrorists is a new phenomenon. Totally new. It changes the whole picture. Now, we may have to deal with fanatical individuals who may think little about using them – because they “know” unequivocally what is the will of God – or, for that matter, what are the ‘greater’ (political) priorities. You say that everyone talks about the need for a new political “infrastructure”… Strange. I see very little of any such understanding. Thanks for the fun discussions… I’d like to wish you and everyone here a happy New Year.

Recently, in a conversation, someone asked me, “Why are we so assertive NOW against Iraq and Korea?” My answer was, “9/11”. You, and many other critics of the US policies have a good point: it is true that nothing really happened which wasn’t there before; whoever is presently working on their nukes has been doing so for many years. A question CAN be asked, Why now? Why all this sudden excitement over something that we knew all along? The short answer is, ‘9/11’. We – yes – we awoke to certain realities. We are no longer capable of remaining complacent. If some psychotic clowns can come and bomb our cities – and mass murder our citizens – we must acknowledge the simple and realistic possibility that others like them might come and plant nukes – or other WMD’s – on our soil. Any US President who would fail to take measures needed to protect our population would be criminally negligent. True leadership implies not only applying pressure on enemies, but also at times standing up to one’s friends. In its bare essence, this is what is driving right now George W. Bush – and America. Understand this, and many other things will fall into place.
