10:02 ET Consumer confidence weaker than expected
December Consumer Confidence fell to 80.3 from 84.9 in November; this was significantly lower than the 86.0 consensus. This decline stands in contrast to the slight improvement seen in the Michigan consumer sentiment numbers for December. Given the mixed message of the two indexes, it is probably safe to assume that the rise in one and decline in the other are just noise, and that consumer sentiment didn't change much in December.

Briefing.com jumping to conclusions yet again.
