I gather, because you sent the post to me, you are asking me these questions, Mike. Obviously, I cannot answer them; nor can anyone seriously do so. I think, however, some of those questions are the wrong questions. It's less about Hamas and more about what the large majority of Palestinians are willing to support. If that majority moves toward Hamas for whatever reasons, as I suspect they might be doing now, political settlement because much more difficult. If that majority sees some light for the future, some prospect of negotiated political settlements, then such movement in that direction might be slowed down or reversed. Unfortunately, given the events of the past couple of years or so, the momentum is the other direction and will take a great deal of time to reverse.

To be even more frank about this, I think one of the problems is a severe deficit of leadership (to borrow one of Paul Philp's categories). Neither party has good leadership now; just at a time when the US lacks such as well.
