That's where multi-IM clients come in, programs like VeriChat that support multiple IM networks at once. The instant messenging (IM) market today is horribly fragmented, with several proprietary systems competing and overlapping. That had led to the rise of "Unified IM Clients", programs that provide a single interface for users to access multiple proprietary IM networks. VeriChat is a Palm OS unified IM client that runs on any Palm OS device with a full data connection, and phone SMS support. That includes Palm OS smartphones such as the Handspring Treo and devices connected to a regular cell phone via Bluetooth or cable. VeriChat supports the AOL Instant Messenger (AIM), MSN Instant Messenger (MSM), and Yahoo! Messenger (Y!M) instant messenging protocols, all within a single program and interface. The support for each network includes each network's traditional icons and graphics. All transmissions go first through VeriChat's proxy server over SMS, and from there are relayed to the proprietary IM network. VeriChat supports always-logged-on connections, that is, even when the user is not in the VeriChat application itself. Users can maintain several conversations with multiple other IM users on different networks simultaneously. (Obviously, a device with an always-on data connection over GPRS or 1xRTT makes that easier.) The program is also designed with the Treo thumb board in mind, for faster typing, and supports the Treo's jog wheel for stylus-free usage. VeriChat is a small program at only 81 KB. A 15-day demo version is available, although so far no price for the registered version has been set.
