you seem more focused on group responsibility. yes? no?

i believe in pushing power and responsibility down to
the individual rather than vice versa

Not so much group responsibility as cultural diversity. Your paean for individual power, responsibility, crime, justice and even reward... is a very western idea. The extreme form of individual rights and responsibility, you espouse is quite American. On a personal level as an American myself, I share your views.

When it comes to establishing an American cultural hegemony over the rest of the world, I question both our right and our ability. I don't think it is necessary that the Middle East (or the rest of the world) emulate us in the exaltation of the individual. My goals are much more modest. Just peaceful compatibility.

I suspect that my goals, albeit different, are just as unrealistically utopian as yours. Given the shrinkage of time and space that our technologically enhanced transportation and communication systems have produced, cultural competition may be inevitable and fierce. That same technology has so enhanced our destructiveness that we must strive to keep our competition as peaceful as possible.
