Thursday, January 02, 2003 Senior officer: Qaida chief in region to recruit Palestinians

By Amos Harel, Ha'aretz Correspondent

One of the six senior Al-Qaida leaders is active in the Middle East attempting to enlist Palestinians as part of terror cells, a senior officer in the IDF General Staff said Wednesday.

According to the officer, the leader of the international terror network, which has begun to establish Palestinian cells, has arrived to aid with the recruitment, which is taking place primarily in the Gaza Strip.

The new cell members were set to receive training in Al-Qaida bases overseas before returning to Israel.

The senior terrorist apparently crossed the Pakistan-Afghanistan border and entered the Jordanian capital Amman before traveling to Damascus and finally ending up in his current location, Beirut.

The officer also said that Al-Qaida had shifted its policy and was now focusing more on Israeli and Jewish targets.

IDF officer: Syria supplying missiles to Hezbollah
In the past year, Syria has begun to produce long-range missiles, which it is supplying to Hezbollah, a senior IDF officer said Wednesday. According to the officer, the missiles are being produced in line with the wishes of Syrian President Bashar Assad, who wishes to further cement relations with both Hezbollah and Iran.

Assad intends to support Hezbollah's strikes against Israel and tighten the guerilla group's hold in Lebanon in order to prevent the Lebanese army from deploying troops to the southern part of the country, which borders Israel.

"Hafez Assad would spin his grave if he knew his son was strengthening ties with Iran," the IDF officer said.
