What he actually said - provided by the people you are arguing with - made no sense and was wide open to interpretation. I invented the internet is one fair paraphrasing of it. What he said was laughable and so deserves to be laughed at.

What he did was get his name placed on some general pork bills that miraculously happened to do some good.

You were right in the most narrow terms ( which no one disagreed with anyway ) but wrong in the broader argument - that Gore deserves any credit, let alone the lion's share ( "I took the initiative" ) for the internet.
