Gates position versus Bush tax cuts is well known.
Dixiecrats were courted by the Nixon GOP after the George Wallace racists almost won the election. Wallace was a renegade Democrat at the time who ran as a third party candidate. As the Pat Buchanon of his time with a much more racist slant, Wallace shocked everyone. When he was shot he was actually leading the presdential race.Wonder who arranged that shooting? Anyway, the GOP moved in to take his voting base. As a result they insulted northern moderates some of whom have fled to the Democratic party. Other moderate Republicans are hanging in there trying to make a difference. But they keep getting stabbed in the back. They particularly hate Bush's environmental attacks. Bush's northeast roots keep most from bolting. Bush in this way is the perfect GOP candidate, someone who can appeal to both groups just enough. But Kerry can still beat him because Bush is a failure as a president. I think they have given up on the economy trying to blame it on Saddam today. And Kerry can beat Bush on military, foeign affairs and counter-terrorism issues too. he will carry much of the Vet vote and that will make the difference in a few formerly GOP states. he will run with either Edwards or McCain who will also trump Bush unless he picks Condi Rice or Colin Powell, then we could have a real interesting race. But will the closet racists in the GOP ever allow that?
