-- UPDATE 1-Before the Bell-Cisco, Microsoft, Abbott gain --

(Adds Abbott, futures)
NEW YORK, Jan 2 (Reuters) - Cisco Systems Inc. <CSCO.O> was
among stocks to inch higher in pre-market trading on Thursday as
many investors anticipated the new year would bring long-awaited
gains after three straight years of losses.
All but one of the 10 most active Nasdaq stocks were higher,
pointing to a higher open for the Nasdaq composite index
<.IXIC>.
Cisco rose to $13.17 on electronic trading system Instinet
from its Tuesday close at $13.10. Investors pushed the stock
higher even after UBS Warburg cut its earnings and revenue
outlook for Cisco's January quarter, saying that the U.S.
enterprise market is shaping up to be weaker than expected.
Other technology stocks to rise included software maker
Microsoft Corp. <MSFT.O>, which rose to $52.31 from its close at
$51.70, and chipmaker Intel Corp. <INTC.O>, which advanced to
$15.78, from its Tuesday close at $15.57.
U.S. stock markets were closed on Wednesday for the New
Year's holiday.
Abbott Laboratories Inc. <ABT.N> inched up to $40.75, from
its Tuesday close at $40.00, after saying on Tuesday after
exchanges closed that regulators had approved its rheumatoid
arthritis treatment, Humira, and said it sees sales of the drug
reaching $1 billion because it is easier to administer than rival
treatments and may be safer.
Stock futures pointed to a higher open. March futures for the
S&P 500 advanced 8 points to 886.70. Futures for the Dow Jones
industrials climbed 54 points to 8,385, while futures for the
Nasdaq 100 gained 10 points to 997.
