"Instead of merely going to the U.N. for bold finger-wagging, President Bush should order a draw down of U.S.
troops in South Korea, where they are now reviled and serve only as hostages to the North. Let Koreans pursue
bold dialogues with each other."

Love it... let's get out.. let south Korea and the new kids on the block go demonstrate about something else.. Our guys would get slaughtered if the North Koreas were to open up their guns in the mountains and troops started coming across the dmz. Take the savings from the troops not being in south korea and put it into more advantage weapon systems.

Nadine,
Now Safire is stealing from me!<g> I agree with his analysis almost entirely. Do disagree that bringing the UN into the Iraq debate was a mistake but other than that I think the Chinese/Russians/Japanese and SKoreans need to take responsibility for their back yard. We can provided backup if needed.
Also, I would go further and hold the Europeans feet to the fire the next time there is a crisis there. In the Mideast, most of Africa and certainly Latin America, US should take the lead. Its time for these other guys to grow up and do their fair share.
Add this Safire piece to the earlier Marshall piece and you can begin to see the problem for what it resembles which is spoiled kids who resent their parents but who cannot live without the material things they provide--in this case defense. Mike
