Asia IT spending continues to boom, says report
By Semiconductor Business News
January 2, 2003

BOSTON--Information technology (IT) spending in Asian-Pacific will grow from $257 billion in 2002 to $330 billion in 2006, with the region's share of worldwide spending increasing from 21.1% to 22.9%, according to a new report by Aberdeen Group here today.

The region's growth will be led by China and India, whose IT spending will grow at a compound annual growth rate of 14.6% and 10.9%, respectively, between 2002 and 2006, according to the report.

Korea and Australia will follow with growth rates of 10.8% and 7.1% respectively, the report said. It also notes that Japan, which has the highest spending in the region, and the second largest IT spending in the world, has the lowest projected growth rate (2.25%) between 2002 and 2006 of any country in Asia, due to its continuing economic distress and lack of capital investment.

Although the region ranks a close third in overall regional IT spending to North America and Europe, the region contains far more developing economies that either of the other two. Consequently, hardware will continue to dominate IT spending, increasing from $124 billion in 2002 to $155 billion in 2006. Software will grow from $47 billion to $66 billion and services will grow to a $109 billion market in 2006.
