(CME) reached a record 558.4 million contracts in 2002, the highest level in the exchange's 104-year history and 36% higher than the prior record in 2001. Volume on CME's Globex electronic trading platform stood at nearly 198 million contracts in 2002, up 142% from the record set in 2001. Average daily volume for the year was 2.2 million contracts, compared with 1.6 million in 2001, a 35% increase. Average daily Globex volume was 785,615, and peaked at more than a million contracts on a single day for the first time in June. By year's end, 55 million-plus days occurred on Globex. The notional value, or underlying dollar value of transactions on CME in 2002 represented $328.6 trillion in asset allocation and risk management activity, an increase of 12% above the record $294 trillion in 2001. Average daily notional value was $1.3 trillion in 2001, compared with $1.2 trillion in 2001. CME President and Chief Executive Jim McNulty said the tremendous volume growth in E-mini stock index products contributed strongly to the record year, as volume rose 194% on a year-over-year basis. Eurodollar futures remained the exchange's most actively traded product, despite the fact that there was only one interest rate adjustment from the Federal Reserve in 2002, compared with 11 in 2001, he said. December 2002 was the CME's busiest December in history, with more than 39 million contracts changing hands, an increase of 19% over 2001. CME Inc. is the largest futures exchange in the U.S. and the second-largest exchange in the world for the trading of futures and options on futures. On Dec. 6, 2002, Chicago Mercantile Exchange Holdings Inc. and its CME subsidiary became the first publicly traded U.S. financial exchange. -By Kristina Zurla, Dow Jones Newswires; 312-750-4132; kristina.zurla@dowjones.com (END) Dow Jones Newswires 01-02-03 1722ET- - 05 22 PM EST 01-02-03 Symbols: US;CME 02-Jan-2003 22:22:00 GMT Source DJ - Dow Jones
