Tuscon, Ariz.-based Arch Crawford publishes the financial newsletter Crawford Perspectives, which tells readers how to pick stocks, in part based on the alignment of the stars.

Mr. Crawford is a market timer who consults more conventional technical analysis measures -- including advance-decline lines, moving averages and trading volume -- but for a longer-term view, he analyzes the market's horoscope.

"Anything for a long way out in time has to be much more weighted to the astrology side," he says.

In December, "overwhelming short-term evidence" prompted Mr. Crawford to sell his stocks and take up short positions (short sellers profit when prices drop), and he advised readers to do the same.

Mr. Crawford based his decision on the long-term technical chart picture and a tool of astroeconomics called the Bradley Model.
