No, they're not, but Sandisk developed the compact flash standard, and is probably the best.

Zoro, well, SanDisk invented CompactFlash...

...but all manufacturers are expected to live up to the same standard.

SanDisk has really driven down costs since they can manufacture and assemble
all components of their cards independently. You could save $30 and put it toward
another set of rechargeable batteries.
