Scott,
Frankly sharon may be the last israeli leader who could play that roll. Israelis are weary and yearn for peace. The escalation by sharon could be designed to kill as many terrorists as possible before the election and a possible peace. The incidental killings are sad but this goes on in war. To blame israel as the author does and as do many others fails to take into account that this is what war is.
Once the Palestinians have a state, perhaps they will give up the fantasy of destroying israel as they concentrate on building a future. Peace comes out of war and i hope this will be a turning point.
It would be nice to avoid an iraq war as well but that could be far more difficult given saddams nature. An iraq war certainly will delay a palestinian settlement. And as an aside, the israelis have unfinished business with Hizbollah that cannot be ignored either. Its never easy. Mike
