I don't know. My guess is that they started with Nichia's patents on GaN/sapphire and worked until they found a way to produce blue LEDs that didn't violate Nichia's patents.

Cree started trying to commercialize SiC. When Nichia was successful with GaN, Cree redirected their research program to GaN, but using SiC as the substrate.

I browsed the Lumileds web site looking for financial information. I didn't find any. They're apparently a private company (owned by Agilent and Philips Lighting). I did find an interesting page with some technical presentations:http://www.lumileds.com/technology/technology_index.html.

I wonder how much of lumileds success is based on blue LEDs. They've been in the red LED market for a long time and I suspect that contributes the bulk of their revenue.
