I was just happy to see the great Tecumseh mentioned here.

My favorite American fighters are the Indians.

The Shawnees were fierce warriors. They were among the most feared and respected of Ohio's Indians and Tecumseh was their most famous chief.

My favorites are the Plains Indians. They were introduced to the horse by Spaniards around 1550 and adopted it with a vengeance. It made them into fearsome warriors. They could cover a hundred miles in a day and strike at weak forward points and be long gone before anyone could apprehend them. No military force or militia could handle them. They comprised without doubt the finest light cavalry of the nineteenth century.

It took the "Total War" of General Sherman to defeat them. First the buffalo, from which they derived most necessities of life, was exterminated and then in winter while the horses were weak they were attacked.

But they weren't fully defeated until 1885-90.
