<<the real losers will be the small, independent hardward and lumber companies>>Actually there really aren't any 'independent' hardware and lumber co's to speak of...they're all affilliated with cooperative buying groups like ACE that enhance buying power and help with best practices. While they've taken lumps from the big boxes, I suspect there's a bit of bounce back in the offing: When you go to Home Depot seeking help with a project, it's tough to find someone...OTOH most hardware stores offer informed assistance that can save a lot of time and hassle.
