While we were living in Belgium, the British yobbos were an embarrassment [speaking English easily gets people to mistake one for the wrong variety]. As you say, Pommy yobbos might even be world champions now, not to be outdone by casually obnoxious Yanks. The British are intentionally obnoxious. Heck, if they held an Obnoxious Olympic Games these days, the competition would be severe. I think Americans would fail to perform. I'm not aware of recent examples of crassness from Americans that I've experienced [other than yourself, and some others in SI - hahahah... that's a good one ... right between the eyes]. Heck, call me a racist, but some of my best friends are Yanks. BTW, a trivial detail, but re <So I gratefully accepted her money > I meant, "I graciously accepted her money". It wasn't really grateful. Money as a motivator is over-rated in the world. Appreciation and love are much more powerful. Mqurice PS: I've tried baiting Hawkmoon into being obnoxious, but he's steadfastly civilized - pointing out that Jesus was probably homosexual gets him going though. Actually, I suspect that was the case [or, in the modern parlance, bisexual]. Let's face it, he wasn't married with a large family was he? And what the heck were all those male disciples up to - they weren't soldiers, they were a bunch of guys hanging around a guy wearing a long dress-looking thing? What's that about? Did the disciples have wives and children? Why were they out at last suppers instead of home looking after their wives and reading their children stories and watching tv?
