RE Hardware hangover
Great stuff Scott:
There are brilliant minds being brought to bear on the problems. Perhaps one in a thousand students
will be able to "see" beyond the outrageous complexity of systems integration to the next levels and come up with the best answers
Unique minds- developed , encouraged , and inspired by the educational systems.
Like an orchestra conductor might remember the specific notes and sequencing of 1000 scores in several languages
Or a sports announcer can remember the scores and players of a Cubs team game played in the 1940's
( thats unique, but not too useful to the job at hand)
I was thinking a Michaelangelo type might fit the job
I would picture the Internet as a double line railroad with trains consisting of millions of connected cars whizzing back and forth around the world at the speed of light in a fiber cable. ( A MSFT fix may be several megabytes long, all tagged with a destination marker)
The cars( bytes) are being produced (even as I type here) and each one( like an on-line bank deposit) will be stored somewhere forever (haha) (Dont forget to erase those Msft E-mails)
If it were not for the fact that glass fibers can now carry data over 60 or more frequencies instead of just one( because of some brilliant engineers work ) we would need a LOT more cables and still will need more.
Since every byte gets stored somewhere, for some time span, like 7 years for IRS data( haha) and more and more people and businesses are going on-line there is still a incredible and rapidly growing demand for storage.
The problem for the manufacturers is that the cost of storage is (properly) dropping like a lead balloon
Remember the cost of the original 5 1/4 in disks ?- in dollars) Or an Atari disk drive for $1050?
To continue:
The trains of data have a destination, where they are sometimes merely stored, such as in your local computer memory) but more usually they are disassembled and processed and then sent to storage or back to the sending station. I dont want to go into the complexity of 128 bit security, firewalls. or FBI intercepts here to avoid confusion.
I want to point out that proprietary hardware is passe, its gone
Any company that continues to make storage components or systems that can only be understood or fixed by their own people will die
( excepting a few exotic applications under military or security contract)
Countries that use proprietary language ( 128 dialects in China?) or qoute figures in Rials without making them
convertable will have trouble dealing with other countries and will get left in the dust of this fast-moving new WEB world.
Now back to the Msft fixes:
I get about one reminder per week to install a Msft security fix, produced in Redmond Wash
With over 90 % of computers worldwide running MSFT OS, it would jam the lines to have it all come only from Redmond. Thus copies get stored in many storage units much closer to the use. Again, a major demand for more storage
Summary:
And at this point I have to give up completely on IMPLICATIONS produced by your referenced URL..
1. The writer has no imagination and nothing to offer to define the actual magnitude of WEB usage and growth.
My Grandkids showed up here at Christmas, carrying all kinds of game players, boxes, digital cameras,.and Dell laptops all having megabytes of transferrable storage.
2. A typical server/data storage area ( I forget what they are properly called) consumes as much electrical power as 100 homes. With dropping costs of new storage devices and servers having 1/3 d's the power requirement
it may save money to junk the original hardware and replace it with new to save 2/3 ds of the power cost.
Who knows?
