CB, what makes sense to me is that the USA is in the beginnings of a cultural war against fundamental islam and our leadership , indeed the mindset of American society is a its core unable to approach that notion as even possible, reasonable, or even imaginable. Mostly I keep my opinions to myself, I put my money where I think it is safest, and I long for acceptance of a new mantra for the USA, articulated by Caligula, himself no role model I grant you, but truth or good advice comes even from madmen(remember the saying, 'out of the mouths of babes?')...oderint dum metuant: what matter they hate (me) as long as they fear (me)...I like old Ben Franklin's first choice for the flag of the USA, the one with the viper, "Don't tread on me". I have not forgotten 9/11 and do not even remotely expect it was an isolated event, nor do I think the First Amendment will allow us a meaningful solution. I truly think the majority of our people hae let go their visceral emotions and perceptions of that day. And there has been no payback, no accounting. I have now read the entire official Saud house version of their book(boring!), take them at their word. The piece refernced may indeed be a hoax. However! Salman Rushdie teaches us through his own recount of his journey that we take islam lightly at our own peril. 'nough said...this debate is like a woman's right to choose...it will go nowhere...until the next BIG one. I do not relish an "I told you so" Think back now on your own anxiety regarding anthrax. How quickly our grasp of imminent danger wanes as we are lulled by the pace of our daily lives. My opinion, just that: we are stupid for going after the camel boy (saddam with emphasis on first syllable) instead ot TAKING the Saudi oil fields, and defending them by any means necessary. What ever happened to this thing called Al-Qaeda? What is China really going to do? Or Russia? Who cares about the French? They don't like us anyway. It is a very tough world and I do not believe we are going to survive by being "nice". I guess I am more a Roman at heart. Smile. It is Saturday and I am not in charge. I have lived for 20 years in Seattle and have a friend in INS for the ports who has worried for years WHAT those thousands of containers hold that are never searched. And then there is the Canadian border. HAHAHAHA...yeah, Tom Ridge makes me feel much safer. The shrub has no real competition from ANYBODY on the other side of the aisle. None of 'em get it IMO. In the fullness of time we shall all see what time has in store for us. And who wins...the 7th century allegiance to that lunatic, misogynist, epileptic pedophile or a carefully crafted, cautious, tough entry into the 21st century. There is no word for what I have become...not racist, not xenophobic. There are arabs, american blacks, indonesians, lots more...for grins...I'll call it islamaphobic, with extreme prejudice, to borrow the military euphemysm. Smile, I am too old to be lectured to even by someone as erudite as you as I read constantly and draw my conclusions about which I would be delighted to be mislead and foolish.
