Extremists exist in all religions.

Unfortunately, with Islam, it is a bit more than that. They have a much higher percentage of extremists, they are more violent and the supposedly peaceful adherents do little to disavow the violent faction.

Democracy has done a great deal to mellow Christian theology. Some degree of passivity is needed in religion to enjoy the best of what it offers society. Without goodwill it becomes a destructive force.
