I don't know... I really don't understand the underlying technologies of search engines. Remember inktomi- at one point they did this too didn't they?

Apparently (impristine help me out here).. these search engines crawl the internet with some sort of analytical tech that comes up with a set of links available to every keyword... there is a term "spider" I think that is referring to this process... you are not supposed to retrieve any dead links and you want the crux of the page you are searching for not some esoteric aspect of the document... the example I've seen used is "governor gray davis"- you are not supposed to pull any thing gray, etc. then there is a whole hierarchy to it where important stuff is supposed to come first in the linked list and no duplicates with different pages from essentially the same site.

I remember there were tons of search companies out there, dogpile wasn't that one gnet had, excite had their own but it seems consolidation has chosen google as the winner. Although there are other up and comers... but it may be too late?

If the mkt continues to be depressed I will likely buy google at the ipo, even though people will no doubt say it is overvalued.
