Now you and I both know that Elizabeth R was Elizabeth I but maybe those British folk over there thought since "R" was dead and gone for so long that they could just refer to the Queen Mother as Elizabeth I. I'm not sure. I just know that the Queen Mother, Elizabeth was called Elizabeth I after her daughter Elizabeth II was born. I thought Liz didn't become the II until she became Queen when her daddy the King died. Now you know why they lost the colonies; stupid crap like re-naming people in mid-life for no good reason. Further to Laz's reference, lucidcafe.com I found this passage at: lucidcafe.com Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth was born in London on April, 21 1926, first child of the Duke and Duchess of York, subsequently King George VI and Queen Elizabeth. Five weeks later she was christened in the chapel of Buckingham Palace and was given the names Elizabeth Alexandra Mary Windsor. The Queen ascended the throne on February 6, 1952 upon the death of her father, King George VI. Her Coronation followed on June 2, 1953. Note the absence of a suffix "I" to the Queen mum's name. She was called Queen Elizabeth only because she was the wife of the King and only while he was King. When George died, her title became "Queen Mother". The enumerated titles are reserved for a ruling Queen like Elizabeth I and II. If whomever becomes the next King and his wife's name is Elizabeth, she will be called Queen Elizabeth, also, but without an enumerated suffix, and only as long as he is King. btw, if enough people died I could become the King of England and France. In the early 1900's my grandmother on my father's side had her genealogy traced. It went back to Queen Mary of Scots, so I am somewhere in the line of succession to the throne.
