James Joyce? I had heard about him. In the dirty dusty corridors that smelled of mediocrity in a college where nothing good ever came out of education except a certificate that helped us all pretend we knew something worthwhile and made our parents less guilty about having been born on the wrong side of the Pacific. I had wanted to be a writer-philosopher. My uncle told me that a good husband would be difficult to catch, especially since my parents were dead and I did not have a big dowry to buy a decent groom. These days, all good ones need a hook, he added with the wisdom of his years. So I decided on mechanical engineering. He said electronics has a lot of girls in class. It is imperative to have many virtuous virgins in your class.. I wasn’t really pregnant for any of those 5 years, but I said All Right, I’ll even wear the dowdy phirans - the shapeless bags that sag in the right (wrong?) places and are meant to hide all signs of my feminity. In the subsequent years I tried to remember James Joyce, but the emitters and collectors colluded against me. Instead of fiction and poetry, I wrote business proposals till age brought a distaste for my profession. 41 now - I plan on making a new start with Joyce. My uncle coughs politely when I inform him of my resolve. “Are there other girls in your class?” he asks.
