Draw 2, discard 1 is the way I was taught, too. I think it is a standard rule, along with deuce's and Joker's wild which provided 12 wild cards per hand. By the time I was 11 yrs old, I played on a par with my parents. My dad called 3-handed Canasta "cut-throat".
