They spin this though they know they're not. What black or woman would be allowed to lead the GOP? From the party that champions the government taking away womens' reproductive rigfhts? They love having Powell and Rice there as camouflage, but Powell disagrees with half of Bush's policies. Powell might be a winner in a national election but probably not in the top spot and not with a conservative like Bush. Perhaps he and McCain might run together, something like that, but both parties know that for some reason the national psyche wants a "presidential-looking" candidate (ie good-looking white male) and even someone like Guliani, Dukakis or other Mediterranean ethnic background candidates are extremely risky to put up. The Democrats tried an Italian woman with Geraldine Ferraro and lost in a landslide. Tried a Greek with Dukakis. Same thing. And it wasn't just that they were too liberal. They didn't sell in the hicks. Same for Lieberman. Forget about him. Gore made a mistake picking him. And Hillary. Not a chance though the GOP would love running against Hillary. Will never happen. These candidates are strong in pockets of the US but cannot win a national election. And the GOP is not about to alienate their closet racist base in the deep south by running a black. A woman someday maybe, but she's have to be a lot tougher and smarter than Elisabeth Dole. Diane Feinstein is the only woman in government with the "balls" to be President, but she's Jewish too. So forget about it. Hey, I'd love a country where anyone could run for President and win, but in the next 10-20 years at least, not gonna happen. More likely a white-looking Hispanic male or a Powell as VP. MAYBE. If they'd allow themselves to run with a conservative white and vice versa. But so far the GOP hasn't even had a POTENTIAL national candidate who's not a white male, unless you count Libby Dole and she lost big-time.
