So you spent all your time in North County, eh?

The San Diego River starts west of Julian and flows south and west until it gets to Mission Valley. It empties into the sea after passing just south of Mission Bay, such that the estuary part begins just west of I-5. 95% of the species of wading birds that visit (or live in) San Diego can be seen there. Ducks, pelicans, terns, etc., too. When the sun and tide are low, they are very active.

The headwater area near Julian features two good, lightly visited waterfalls and swimming holes.

My new spot is on the west side of the Sports Arena bridge. I did not realize its potential until I picked my way down the bank to water level. You cannot see the light I saw looking down from the bridge or walkway.

It pays to explore.

Cheers, Tuck
