Perhaps a closer analogy would be the owner of some cows. If a calf is born then there is tax due when it is sold. A dividend marks the increase of the investment much as a calf marks the increase of the herd, only a dividend doesn't need to be sold since it is already in the form of cash.

CEOs are afraid of dividends because it gets to money back to the shareholders before they have a chance to loot the company.
