Wallace was a Democrat and one of the last Dixiecrats before Nixonites moved in on them to woo them into the GOP. The Southern Strategy worked perfectly and now the GOP can claim all of the old Wallace type voters. Now these neo-Wallace types control much of the GOP. Texas far-right conservatives like Tom Delay also used to be Democats some 30-40 years ago. Now as Republicans they dont have to pretend they're for Civil Rights. Worked out perfectly for the GOP except it's alienated their moderates.
