You dont known the GOP's Southern Strategy? Started when Nixon came close to actually winning that election. 1972 I believe it was. That's when the big social conservative/anti civil rights move came within the GOP to appeal to those Wallace voters. The transition took about 20 years and worked like gangbusters for the GOP. Now there are almost zero bigots left in the the democratic south. Jimmy Carter and Ted Turner ushered in the New South which was a more liberal-moderate southern tone but it didn't last long as Carter's presidency fizzled, mostly due to the horrendous oil embargo and Iran hostage crisis.
