Progressive not liberal. Liberal connotes old-fashioned programs. It's a word that the right has attacked so much it no longer holds its proper meaning. Progressive means looking forward, willing to tackle issues like welfare reform, minimizing and modernizing affirmative action, being strong but smart on defense, fighting corruption (the old democrat union brand as well as the big energy-wall street brand), caring greatly about cleaner energy, efficiency and the preservation of our wildlands as well as cleanliness of our air and water, creating a vibrant global economy stressing unity rather than acrimony. Fiscal conservatism is something progrssives also care a lot about. And fairly liberal on social issues but knowing where to draw the line. These are all winning issues. I believe John Kerry now embodies them best and also is the man who can beat Bush. Bush has been a big disappointment to progressives who had hoped he wouldn't be so one-sided.
