many folk who work within that framework note that the superstructure not only can act "relatively autonomously" to base but those actions can, in turn, alter the base. In short, the hot air of preemptive invasion can alter the actual strength of the US because it erodes the soft power.

agreed, in principle. I just don't think that's happened (yet). And I doubt it will.

PS I think "soft power" is less temporary favorable opinion than a general durable appeal of our model, akin to a sort of Gramscian ideological hegemony that complements our more traditional material hegemony. So I don't see even these bozos undermining it--again, at least not yet.
