the first place I'd look for a quick, authoritative update on the current status of those questions is the Pollack book. I realize I sound like a broken record on that front, but precisely because so little of the stuff on this subject can be relied upon, as you say, it's a good place to start. Then I'd follow that up with current stuff from the best think-tanks and perhaps a mix of top journalism (to gather a range of perspectives). tb@youinterestedinthewheytoo?.com
