Mobile Carrier KTF in Search of New CEO

KTF is looking for a new chief executive officer to head the company after finalizing a merger with KT ICOM in March.

Its parent firm, KT, yesterday announced publicly that it was seeking to fill the post, but there are wide expectations that a KT official will eventually take the helm.

KTF officials have kept silent on applicants for the post, while hoping Lee Kyung-joon, the incumbent CEO, is named to head the merged company.

After less than five months in office, Lee Kyung-joon has been credited with spurring the consolidation between KTF and KT ICOM, which had been delayed for the past one-and-a-half years.

Traditionally, the top jobs at KT subsidiaries have been held by company insiders, and KT's chief financial officer Nam Joong-soo is one of possible candidates for the new CEO of KTF.

Nam had previously served as a chief of third-generation (3G) telecom business before KT was fully privatized last summer.

Assuming the duties as president and CEO was not something he sought, people close to the situation said, but it was something the board thought was necessary.

Cho Young-chu, a CEO of KT ICOM, is also on the list of candidates. He has led the unlisted company since March 2001 after KT was awarded a license worth 1.3 trillion won for 3G telephone service.

KT ICOM earmarked 500 billion won for its 3G budget last year and plans to invest a total of 2.5 trillion won to roll out its 3G network based on wideband CDMA (WCDMA) technology across the nation by 2005.

However, it remains unclear how the company will launch the WCDMA-based 3G service after the merger.

For 2003, KTF said it decided to spend some 200 billion won for the 3G network out of total spending of 1.1 trillion won. The remaining investment will be made for another 3G push, known as CDMA2000 1X EV-DO (evolution data optimized) service.

Benjamin,

re "Korea is now set to provide both cdma2000 1x EV-DO and W- CDMA 3G services ... "

To compare CDMA2000 1x and W-CDMA, one must consider both voice and data capabilities. My understanding is that "cdma2000 1x EV-DO" is data only .. hence the "DO".

The author writes as if cdma2000 1x EV-DO includes voice .. or implies voice also. Has the definition changed .. or is the author just taking "poetic license"?
